"I was a freshman seminary student (ATS) the first time that I sat in Dr. Mitzi Smith’s class. I quickly learned that she is a brilliant, challenging and inspiring instructor. Under her study I discovered answers to my many biblical and spiritual questions. Dr. Smith challenged me to endeavor to become a better student and with her support, I found my voice and dared to express it!
Recently, when I heard Dr. Smith preach for the first time, I was delighted. I came with great anticipation and expectation and I was not disappointed. She was humble and authentic and she delivered a message of courage and encouragement with a vibrant message of God as liberator. Rev. Dr. Smith is refreshingly courageous, yet sensitive as she addresses current day social issues from a Bible-based, relevant gospel lens of love. Dr. Smith is truly an anointed teacher and preacher." -- Aljenae Wilson, July 8, 2014
I recently went to hear Rev. Dr. Smith preach at an AME church in Detroit. Dr. Smith’s sermon was on the woman caught in the act of adultery. I remember thinking to myself, how will Dr. Smith present this woman in a favorable light. Coming to know Dr. Smith as I have, (student at ATS) I came with great expectation. What I was not expecting, was the very thing my spirit was in desperate need of. Dr. Smith re-introduced me to the loving compassionate, Jesus that I had not heard preached about in such a long time. When Dr. Smith pointed out; “that Jesus was writing in the dust really to right the injustice placed upon on this woman” I wept. Rev. Dr. Smith reminded me of the Jesus that I have come to know and love, thank you! Rev. Dr. Smith has been such a great inspiration in the classroom and the pulpit. Her vast knowledge, and love for God’s word enhances her ability to “rightly divide the word.” Dr. Smith is truly gifted and anointed by God." --- Roslyn Bouier, July 7, 2014
"Dr. Mitzi Smith is one of my favorite preachers. She has the courage to speak truth to power and her core message of God's preference for the poor and the oppressed opens up the possibilities for transformation of the hearts and minds of her listeners. Her Bible-based sermons are always theologically sound, but her ability to make biblical lessons relevant for today's audience is what impresses most. Let those who have ears hear her voice of faith shining through."

"Dr. Mitzi Smith is a prophetic voice for the Church today. She is an insightful, powerful, deliberate and passionate preacher of our Great Gospel. When I first heard her preach, I had another engagement to attend. My plan was to stay and hear her preach for just a few minutes before darting out. I however was so captivated by her hermeneutical genius and her homiletical gifting that I stayed and opted to be late for my other engagement. When she opened her mouth, I became for those 30 minutes or so, her student. In the words of the now late Dr. Mack King Carter, Dr. Smith's sermonic voice on that day was "delicious" and I might add filling. Since then I can say that I not only admire her reputation and representation as a part of the academy but I am thankful for the preacher in her. Bless you Dr. Smith for doing all things well."
"I met Dr. Smith as a student at Ashland Theological Seminary. I had heard she was joining the faculty of Ashland. When I read her credentials as an African American woman who received her Mdiv from Howard and PhD from Harvard, I was impressed, excited and anxious to meet her and take her class. She did not disappoint. I was immersed in the most scholarly, womanist, humanistic, exciting class of my seminary experience to date. I'll never forget it, the class was Old Testament. My mind and heart was open to her expertise. Her lectures filled me with affirmations of my innermost self reflected in the interpretation of the text. I felt validated, rooted and sure that the sacred text was inclusive, complex, layered and always pointed to the power and promise of God and God's activity in the lives of people. Her lecture style was inspiring, motivating and thought provoking. She pushed me to a growing edge, she inspired me to want to investigate more and she guided me with dignity to be the best student I could be.
Inspiring, motivating, thought provoking, growing edge, dignity, passion and grace are all words that I would use to describe her preaching of the Good News of Christ Jesus. Dr. Smith will take the text on a scholarly journey and meet the people directly in the secret closet of their lives, only to encourage them out for a new prospective of how The Lord is speaking and moving in the world today as a risen savior, redeemer and liberator. She confronts the issues of injustice and places them in the gospel narrative of faith and works. She challenges the people to know, see, hear and feel the power of life in Christ. I have witnessed her sermons on more than one occasion and they always stay with me as a new and fresh interpretation of the sacred text for the purpose of living under grace and inclusive of all people."

"Dr. Mitzi J. Smith is an anointed preacher with tremendous gifts from God. She blessed our church family powerfully as she delivered the word of God. Dr. Smith preaches with an awesome integrity to the pages of Scripture as she carefully interprets the text for individual and corporate application. Dr. Mitzi Smith displays scholarship as well as passion in her delivery of relevant and dynamic sermons. She touches the hearts of the people of God regarding present social and religious issues, and she does so with courage and sensitivity. I am moved by her love for truth and her willingness to walk on the edge as a voice for those silenced by culture and tradition. Dr. Smith combines heart and head; intellect and instinct for the cause of ministry. To hear her preach is to experience a move of God."
